All pregnancies have some risks specific to the pregnancy. However, they are call ‘High risk pregnancies’ when the risks to baby or the mother are higher than the general population. These risks may be due to conditions arising in the pregnancy itself, pre-existing factors [such as advanced age, smoking etc] or medical conditions of the mother.
Some of the following conditions are commonly found to complicate pregnancies. In case that happens, you would be requiring special care during pregnancy to ensure that we can have the best outcome for you and your baby.
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes in pregnancy
- Thyroid disorders
- Fertility treated pregnancy
- Previous cesarean section
- Recurrent miscarriages
- Twin pregnancy
Having a ‘High Risk’ pregnancy doesn’t mean that you or your baby will necessarily have problems. In fact, most of these pregnancies will also have normal or near-normal outcomes.
What can I do to have a healthy pregnancy?
It is recommended to schedule a pre-conception appointment, get a complete health assessment done and discuss your individual situation. Maintaining a healthy body weight prior to pregnancy is helpful. Any pre existing health conditions need to be optimally managed so that when you get pregnant, you are in the best state of health. Once you become pregnant, seek pregnancy care early and be regular with the appointments and advice. Importantly, avoid intake of any risky substances during pregnancy or in the period when you are planning one.
