Fibroid Uterus
What are fibroids?
Fibroids are non cancerous growths in the womb which are found quite commonly during a woman’s reproductive years.
Why do some women develop fibroids?
The exact reasons why some women develop fibroids and others do not, are not known. We do know that they are linked to hormone levels in the body especially estrogen. Therefore, once you have menopause, the fibroids usually regress in size.
Who are the women at risk of developing fibroids?
Fibroids are found commonly, with approximately 1 in 3 women having fibroids in uterus. The commonest age when women report the condition is between 30-50 years. Pregnancy confers some protection and lowers the risk.
How do I know if I have fibroids?
Majority of women do not have any symptoms. In fact in 2 out of 3 women, the finding may be entirely coincidentally found when a scan is done for any reason. One third of women, however have symptoms such as heavy and painful periods, chronic pelvic pain, low backache, frequent urination, discomfort during intercourse, constipation etc
Can fibroids cause infertility?
Majorly no; having fibroids does not mean you will be infertile. A type of fibroid known as submucus fibroid can occasionally decrease fertility. Some fibroids that distort the shape of uterus from inside may contribute to miscarriages.
How are fibroids treated?
If you do not have any symptoms, you don’t need any treatment usually. Fibroids only rarely develop cancer, so we leave them if they are not causing any problems. Both medical and surgical treatments for fibroids are available. The treatment will depend on your symptoms and your expectations.
