“A pre-pregnancy health checkup is the first step towards ensuring a healthy pregnancy.”Pre-pregnancy or pre-conceptional care is the term given to medical care prior to pregnancy to improve the chances of a healthy pregnancy. It includes a physical examination, nutritional counseling, proper exercise and physiotherapy, medications including multivitamin supplementation, and treatment of any medical conditions. The first 8 weeks of pregnancy are crucial, and the time when the major organs of the baby are developing. It is essential to identify any conditions that could affect your pregnancy before conceiving because events during this initial period could critically affect the development of major organs such as the heart, brain, and kidneys. In case you have an early pregnancy, consult your doctor immediately to avoid any major health issues
What happens during a pre-pregnancy care consultation with us?
Our experienced team focuses on your diet and lifestyle, your medical and family history, any medications that you have taken, and any problems or conditions of previous pregnancies that could have an impact on the next one. We review your vaccination history to make sure that you have had the recommended vaccinations and discuss how to protect yourself from any infections.
How much should I weigh before pregnancy?
One should try to reach a weight which is recommended according to height before getting pregnant. A weight less or more than normal may cause problems during pregnancy. We help you with dietary counseling, planning your diet, and tailoring your exercise regimen.
How much should I exercise when I am planning a pregnancy?
We will help you chalk out a routine that is best suited to your circumstances. However, you should aim to achieve around 150 minutes of moderate physical activity and muscle-strengthening activities at least 2 days a week. These may be divided into short workout sessions, distributed across the week.
Should I take any vitamin supplements?
It is good to take prenatal vitamins in the recommended dosages before pregnancy and continue the same after conception. These may also help reduce nausea and vomiting in the early days of pregnancy. We suggest taking folic acid at least one 1 month prior to pregnancy and in the initial 12 weeks after you conceive. There could be situations when a higher dose of folic acid is recommended.
Is it safe to take herbal supplements or over-the-counter medications?
Some herbal medicines may be harmful to a baby and should be avoided when you are planning a pregnancy. We suggest that you bring your medications to us when you come for your checkup, in their original packaging. We will have a look to assess their safety during pregnancy.
Should I get vaccinated before pregnancy?
If acquired during pregnancy, certain infections can cause problems for mother and baby. Many of these can be prevented by timely vaccination. We suggest that you complete the recommended vaccinations before you plan a pregnancy. Influenza [flu] vaccine, tetanus toxoid [tetvac], and acellular pertussis [T-dap] vaccine are important during pregnancy.
If I had pregnancy problems previously, how will I know if they will occur again?
You may have an increased risk of problems if you have had them in a previous pregnancy such as preterm birth, high blood pressure, and diabetes. However, many a time they can be averted or delayed with proper care during pregnancy. Our team will check your previous pregnancy history and do a detailed risk assessment.
Can pre-existing medical problems cause concerns during pregnancy?
Yes, some conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, depression, and fits, may cause problems during pregnancy. Some health conditions may increase risks for mother or baby. Good pre-pregnancy evaluation and precautions may go a long way in reducing these risks.
Could I be exposed to harmful substances because of my environment?
We will assess your environment to determine whether you might be exposed to toxic substances such as heavy metals, pesticides, or radiation.
